The dollar has lost 91% of its value since 1971. Is it time to return to gold?

In this video, I look at Fidelity International’s decision to double the gold allocation in one of its funds as concerns grow over Federal Reserve credibility, the U.S. dollar and the bond market.

I also go back to my own first gold purchase in June 2002 and compare how gold has performed since then against the Nasdaq 100, S&P 500, FTSE 100, silver and U.S. M2 money supply. The numbers tell an interesting story about what has really happened to our currencies over the past 24 years.

Is gold really going parabolic—or are the pound, dollar and other fiat currencies simply losing purchasing power at an accelerating rate? And could Fidelity’s move be another sign that institutional investors are beginning to wake up to the long-term monetary risks?
